EPIPHANIES

The series is part of a research project on the historical memory of contemporary China. Fascination with the last two centuries' historical events has become, in China, a majestic tool to re-elaborate the national collective identity. But 'memory' does not only refer to collective cultural identities, it is something more personal and deeply intertwined with every individual's psyche, too.
These pictures rise from the overlap/clash between 'existential' and 'monumental' history. They show an attempt to re-call subjective mnemonic and identity processes, which refuse to be left on the border of History and creatively explode through individual illuminations (epiphanies). China's history comes to be re-evoked, as a ghost, appearing/disappearing around us, while the subjective epiphanies become data to be archived and preserved.
